Name rangoli size planner
Free tool · works in your browser, nothing is uploaded · Diwali 2026 is Sunday, November 8
Planning a rangoli with your family or society name at the door? Type the name and the space you have. The planner works out how tall each letter should be, how much gap to leave, and draws a preview. Download a template to print and trace with chalk.
How the numbers are worked out
- Readability: letters need roughly 1.5 cm of height per metre of viewing distance to read comfortably, so 3-4 cm at a doorstep and 15 cm+ at a society gate.
- Fit: stencil capitals are about 0.65 times as wide as they are tall, plus a gap of a quarter letter between letters. If the name doesn't fit at the readable size, the planner tells you to shorten it or split it into two lines.
- Margins: keep 5 cm clear on each side so the edge of the rangoli doesn't get swept by feet or the door.
- Second line: about 55% of the main letter height, with a gap of half a letter between the lines.
Tracing the template
- Print the PNG at the width shown (most print shops can print A3 or larger; tape pages together for wider names).
- Cut the letters out with a craft knife to make a one-time paper stencil, or rub chalk on the back and trace the outlines onto the floor.
- Fill the letters with powder from a paper cone, keep the name one colour, and use extra colours on the pattern around it.
